CHAPTER 11
Christine pulled up to the base of Jackpine Mountain. It was about nine a.m. and the overnight chill still laced the December air. She had bundled up against the cold, and she saw as she got out of the car that Sam was dressed warmly as well. The farther up the trail, the colder it would be, but theyâd also be warmed by the manual labor ahead, so sheâd dressed in layers that she could peel off and put back on as necessary.
Sam was finishing up his coffee in a mug heâd brought from his parentsâ kitchenâthe sad snowman mug, in factâand he put the mug on the top of his car as she approached. âHey, Chris,â he said. âStill thinking the Sidewinder Trail would be the best route for the hike?â
âYeah, Oliver and I considered the advantages,â Christine said. âSidewinder has a pretty gentle gradient for most of the way up the mountain, and it should be easy for everyone to handle. Itâs also wide enough to accommodate several Santas across, to avoid logjams.â
âThose are good points,â Sam said. âSeems like you guys have been putting in a lot of work to prepare for this.â
She nodded. Over the past several days, sheâd met with Oliver Holloway multiple times to check in on all the facets of the upcoming event: the hundred participants and their pledge collection, the finalized roster of volunteers and their duties, the logistics of the evening gala, and so forth. He was pleasant and professional and had made barely any reference to Allie and Benâs wedding, which was around the corner, but Christine could tell he was looking forward to their date.
Does it still count as a date if one of us⦠isnât sure sheâd classify it that way? That was a question sheâd been wrestling with for a while now.
âDo we, uh, wait for him or go ahead and start clearing?â Sam asked, awkwardly.
Christine hadnât seen or spoken to Dell since the night he dropped a bomb on her, almost a week ago. Her only communication with him had been a brief text yesterday asking if he was still interested in working on clearing the trail, which heâd agreed to a while ago. He hadnât responded.
âLetâs give him a few minutes,â Christine said. She wasnât sure why she thought he would still show up. It was a small, quiet feeling somewhere in her. Maybe it didnât have to make sense.
A moment later, Dellâs car came rumbling up the road.
She felt herself tensing, wondering at who exactly would step out of that car once it was parked. She kept having this ridiculous vision of Dell in gold chains and some sort of pinstripe suit, a fur-bikini-clad model on each arm, green-tinted shades perched on his face. The color of all that money.
But no, it was the same-looking Dell who came out to greet her and Sam. He looked unprepared for the cold in his fleece vest and his light woolen hat, as if heâd chosen gear at random and run out the door.
